FLINT, MI (July 30, 2014) – On Thursday, July 31, For-Mar Nature Preserve & Arboretum will begin exhibiting nature photographs taken by middle school youth from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Flint (BGCGF) who recently participated in Parks in Focus® — a program of the Udall Foundation that connects middle school youth to nature through photography.

Each summer since 2011, Parks in Focus® has partnered with University Outreach at the University of Michigan-Flint and the BGCGF to introduce Genesee County youth to local parks and natural areas. This year, they put digital cameras in the hands of 20 BGCGF members ages 10 to 14 and guided them on a series of fun and educational outings to Kearsley Park, Genesee County ParksFor-Mar Nature Preserve & Arboretum, Bluebell Beach County Park and Stepping Stone Falls, and the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge. Each program concludes with a three-day camping trip to Bay City State Recreation Area and a visit to the University of Michigan–Flint where participants learn about pre-college programs and create digital stories of their summer adventures. The photographs on display portray the adventures they had and the people, places, plants and animals they met along the way.

The display will kick off with a public reception at For-Mar’s Visitor Center from 2:30-4:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 31. The event will provide an opportunity to learn more about the Parks in Focus® program and meet some of the young photographers. The photographs will be on display through the end of 2014. The visitor center (located at 2142 N. Genesee Road, Burton) is open Wednesdays through Sundays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. To see a digital album of the exhibit, click here.

The 2014 Parks in Focus® Flint program was supported by the Michigan Council for Arts & Cultural Affairs Minigrant Program administered through the Greater Flints Arts Council. Additional program support was provided by the DTE Energy Foundation, Michigan State Parks, University Outreach at the University of Michigan–Flint, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Flint and the Udall Foundation.
